In addition, the studies showed Policosanol’s other benefits to the heart:

• Reduces the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which is critical in improving atherosclerosis.

• Decreases platelet aggregation (blood cells sticking together), which is basically what aspirin does.  This helps your blood flow more smoothly and reduces clotting.

  A 2006 study on Resveratrol at Harvard Medical School reported: “Findings suggest broad implications for the treatment of age-related diseases including diabetes and heart disease”.  Studies have shown positive effects of Resveratrol on heart health including:

• Decreases oxidized LDL cholesterol in the blood
• Supports increased HDL (good) cholesterol
• Opens blood flow in main arteries by enhancing nitric oxide (a substance produced by the body to help blood vessels relax).
• Decreases the tendency of blood cells to stick together which helps in the prevention of heart attacks.
  
  
• Niacin – Long known to be excellent for heart health, hundreds of studies have shown the ability of Niacin to help lower LDL cholesterol levels, raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels, support lower triglycerides, reduce platelets from sticking together,  and prevent harmful clots from forming by reducing fibrinogen in the blood.  Cholestatrim™ uses a non-flush type which eliminates the uncomfortable warm, tingling flush side-effect common to straight niacin. 
  
  
• Vitamins A, C, & E -  Vitamin E is critical because of its ability to attach itself to LDL (bad) Cholesterol cells and prevent them from being oxidized. 
  
  Vitamin C helps protect the thin, endothelium layer of the artery wall. This is where much of the inflammation process begins. Also, Vitamin C helps LDL cholesterol from being oxidized and can help regenerate Vitamin E.

  In a 1997 article in the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Marco Diaz concluded that patients with the highest levels of antioxidants (including A, C, & E)  in their bodies had the least amount of coronary artery disease.
  
  A study of 5,000 Finnish adults showed the relationship between intake of vitamins A, C, and E and reduction in coronary mortality.

• Vitamin B complex – Vitamins B6, B12, and Folic acid are critical in reducing homocysteine in the blood.  The body does this by converting homocysteine back into a harmless substance using enzymes.  These enzymes need the B-vitamins (which many people are deficient in to perform this vital function.  

Again, high levels of homocysteine directly contribute to the development of fatty cholesterol-plaques that lead to hardening of the arteries.  The homocysteine irritates the inner walls of the arteries, creating small oxidative lesions.  The body patches the damage with cholesterol which acts as a “sealing compound” of sorts.  The more this occurs, the more cholesterol your body will produce to repair the damage.

A 1998 Report by the American Heart Association indicated that about one-fifth of the U.S. population may stand a heightened risk of heart attack and stroke because their diet lacks a sufficient amount of vitamin B6 and folic acid.
